There is a tsunami of digital content on the Web with over 2 Bn videos watched every day on YouTube, 150 M images uploaded every month to Flickr and over 152 M blogs to read (ref: BlogPulse). Anyone can publish content on the web, but much of it is poor quality. Consequently, finding high quality content relevant to a specific learning requirement requires more than just a Google search. We are looking to explore the market potential for a novel social media learning solution to the challenge of finding and sharing high quality learning content. Our vision is to create a step-change improvement in education and learning provision via the development of rockfig - a free learning service that helps find the best videos and activities on the web to create, organise and share 'Collections' of Science and Technology web resources to which can be added your own activity and assessment features. Science and Technology are subjects core to learning in schools and interesting for adults with a thirst for knowledge and the need to keep up-to-date, due to their complexity and ever changing nature. Students will focus on defined aspects of the national curriculum in these areas. Adults can find or create resources from the most up-to-date content available that is of general interest in specific areas such as astronomy, environment, internet and computers. rockfig’s intention is not to be viewed as another worthy ‘educational site’, but as something that is a popular, lifelong family learning service that can be used anytime/ anywhere, but is also structured and focused for use by formal learning establishments too. Every user has their own login which takes them to their own specific content with different views suitable for different age ranges and the ability to personalise the content they create.
