The only reliable method for detecting bladder cancer is an expensive and intrusive visual
examination of the inside of the bladder using an endoscope. The commonly used PSA test for
prostate cancer produces around three ‘false positive’ readings for every correct diagnosis,
leading to many unnecessary biopsies.
UroSens is developing a new highly reliable, cheap and simple urine test to diagnose these
conditions by measuring the amount of a protein biomarker called Mcm5 in urine. This
biomarker was discovered and patented by Cancer Research (UK) and has been licensed to
UroSens to develop a test for bladder and prostate cancer. Two scientific trials have shown it
is a very reliable indicator of bladder and prostate cancer. It produces far fewer ‘false
positives’ than the PSA test, leading to a reduction in the number of patients needing a
prostate biopsy operation and could produce large savings in health expenditure.
Further clinical trials are now needed to prove that the test is effective for both prostate and
bladder cancer. The objective of this project is to carry out a controlled clinical trial on 1200
patients to give confidence levels of 95% and obtain regulatory approval in Europe and the
