will develop a smartphone-based Paediatric Clinical Decision support system (PCDS) to help emergency doctors treating seriously ill children to make the correct on-the-spot diagnoses, and administer the correct dosages of the correct drugs, as specified by the particular institution (such as a hospital) and country in which the doctor is working, and according to the drugs and interventions permitted by the doctors particular role. This application will save lives by reducing prescribing errors, improve the working lives of practitioners across the world, by supporting them as they address the highly stressful situations presented by paediatric emergencies.
This project builds on a highly successful generic PCDS application developed by iED in
2009, which has had over 200,000 downloads worldwide, and has gained praise and accolades from senior clinicians from as far afield as Malawi. The addition of location-specific formulae to the system is a step-change for iED that will move this product from its current status as a generic advisory system with guidelines and formulae chosen by iED, into a much more mainstream system that is automatically aligned to the policies, formulae, conditions, and guidelines of whatever institution the clinician using the application is working for.
This proof-of-concept project will develop a location-specific PCDS on one particular
smartphone platform, and build the associated formulary database and website to serve the
application. The proof-of-concept system will trial in 3 UK hospitals and one African site. The
results from the trial will be used to develop the requirements for a full-blown commercial
system.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
