The laminates combine thin-ply composite systems with conductive and insulating layers, enabling multiple material responses within a single structure. These include mechanical stiffness, thermal stability, RF attenuation, reduced magnetic permeability, low outgassing performance and electrical isolation suitable for silicon-based systems.

The feasibility study will evaluate whether these multifunctional laminates can be manufactured in practical 3D shapes while retaining their advanced properties. Activities include structural, thermal and RF modelling; assessment of ultra-thin forming processes; chemical etching and shaping of metallic layers; and development of co-curing methods for hybrid laminates. The project will generate a performance envelope describing where such metamaterials can be successfully deployed.

In addition to high-technology applications, the project has identified a potential emerging use case within the construction and extractive sectors, where deep-tech systems requiring reduced-SWaP metamaterial structures could enable new approaches to mining and materials processing, with the potential to significantly reduce associated CO2 emissions.

The work supports UK growth in metamaterials, advanced manufacturing, aerospace, defence, quantum technologies and scientific instrumentation. It strengthens collaboration between Brick Kiln Composites (BKC) and the University of Oxford, and builds capability within UK manufacturing.

Identified end use applications include;

* Air frame systems,
* Sensitive electronic system chassis,
* Faraday cage applications for multi-stage RF systems,
* Deep-tech enabling structure requiring multi-field responses and exhibiting faraday behaviour</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
