machinery. The company operates primarily in the agricultural and construction machinery
sector. The use of electronics on such machinery has rapidly accelerated over recent years.
Over 80% of RDS production is exported.
To remain competitive in a global market, RDS seeks assistance in developing an innovative
range of instruments and significantly raise the technological base of its products.
The proposed project will develop a Windows platform to provide an advanced new basis for
future products.
A major objective for the project is to use the mobile Windows platform to provide a UK
sourced solution to comply with ISO Standard 11783, more commonly known as ISOBUS.
This is a highly complex standard extending to 14 sections and over 940 pages.
In non-technical terms, ISOBUS is a communication system between tractor and implement.
This enables any tractor suitably equipped with a 'Virtual Terminal' (VT) to communicate
seamlessly to any implement suitably equipped with a 'Job Computer' (JC). Once the two
pieces of machinery are attached together, the tractor and implement will work in harmony.
For harmony to prevail, both the VT and the JC must conform to the details of the ISOBUS
standard. It should be stressed that (as far as aware) no other UK electronics company is
offering an ISOBUS solution, nor is any other UK company developing such a solution.
During the evolution of the system described above, RDS will expect to have other 'spin-off'
developments for other, non-ISOBUS applications.
