This two-month sprint feasibility study (February--March 2026) will explore the development of a recycled carbon fibre (rCF) structural fuel tank reinforced with bio-resins, offering a lightweight, circular and resource-efficient alternative to traditional steel, aluminium or virgin carbon fibre designs.

Motorcycle manufacturers face increasing pressure to cut lifecycle emissions, improve fuel efficiency, and adopt sustainable materials. This project aligns with Innovate UK's priorities for net-zero and resource-efficient manufacturing, smart design and materials for the future economy by applying sustainable composite innovation to a critical structural component.

The study will assess combining rCF with bio-resins to achieve the required strength, crash resistance, and chemical durability while utilising advanced digital simulation to optimise structural performance, reduce material waste and embodied carbon by over 50%. It will also evaluate scalability and manufacturability for series production, including supply chain readiness and process repeatability, providing a clear route from prototype to volume manufacture.

Building on WMC's proven R&D capability and strong OEM relationships, this project will validate sustainable composite fuel tanks as a technically viable and commercially achievable solution, supporting UK leadership in low-carbon transport, circular design, and cleaner, more efficient mobility.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
