While VR enables interaction with digital worlds/simulations, AR overlays digital information with the real world. As head-mounted displays (HMDs), VR and AR have the potential to fundamentally change how we live, learn, and work, with wide-ranging applications in industry, education, healthcare, and entertainment.

However, a major HMD industry challenge is that conventional display technology causes many people to suffer headaches, eyestrain, and discomfort with prolonged use due to VAC (vergence-accommodation conflict). VAC results from a mismatch between two different cues (vergence- eyeball rotation and accommodation-ocular lens focusing) received by the brain to perceive the scene as 3D. VAC mean:

a) some users are unable to use HMD technologies entirely,

b) many users experience discomfort after use, and,

c) most users having limited capacity for prolonged use---requiring regular breaks, e.g.40-minutes on, 20-minutes off.

LarkOptics 'LARK-Lightguide' solution overcomes VAC with a highly innovative lightguide technology that results in displayed HMD information always being in focus, no matter where the eye is focused.
