communication and wellbeing platform for older people suffering from cognitive impairments
such as dementia. The platform aims to support independence for older people with reduced
cognitive function by giving them access to a simple, intuitive and customisable interface to
communicate with their family and friends whilst providing care monitoring capabilities. The
majority of older people do not yet enjoy the benefits of the digital age - low cost
communications and online services that could support some of their real needs - since only
15% use the internet. Severe vision, hearing or dexterity problems frustrate many older
peoples’ efforts (21% of the over 50s) to engage in the information society. People with
cognitive impairment and dementia can have greater difficulties accessing multimedia
technologies in their current format because the interface is too complex or confusing for
them to use easily. To address this needs, iCare proposes an innovative platform that will
bridge the gap between ‘old tech’ (e.g. the television) and ‘new tech’ (computer, smartphone
and tablet) to combat isolation and loneliness among people suffering from cognitive
impairments.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
