It will develop and test a new continuous bioprocessing approach that uses enzymes to convert renewable raw materials into valuable chemical ingredients for sectors such as cosmetics, food, and fragrances.

Traditional chemical production methods rely on fossil-based feedstocks, high temperatures, and large amounts of solvent and energy. Enzyme-based processes offer a cleaner alternative, operating under mild conditions and using renewable materials, but they are often limited by low productivity and high enzyme costs. This project aims to overcome those barriers by improving how enzymes are used and reused, reducing waste and energy consumption, and enabling continuous operation rather than batch production.

The work will generate proof-of-concept data showing that such processes can run efficiently over extended periods while maintaining product quality and consistency. The project will measure key performance indicators such as productivity, enzyme lifetime, resource use, and waste generation, demonstrating significant improvements compared with conventional manufacturing.

The outcome will be a flexible, scalable platform for sustainable biomanufacturing in the UK. The technology will be broadly applicable to many different enzyme-catalysed reactions, allowing future production of a range of bio-based chemicals using the same core process.

This aligns with the UK's strategic goals for net zero and resource-efficient manufacturing by showing how biotechnology can reduce carbon emissions, improve raw material circularity, and strengthen domestic supply chains. By building capability for advanced continuous bioprocessing in the UK, the project supports the transition away from fossil-derived materials and establishes the foundations for cleaner, more resilient manufacturing industries. The results will help demonstrate that sustainable biotechnological routes can be both technically and economically viable at industrial scale.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
