The project aims to explore how **next-generation quantum sensing technologies**, combined with **artificial intelligence**, can provide **non-invasive, rapid, and highly accurate monitoring** of bridges, tunnels, and other critical assets across the UK transport network.

Corrosion of embedded steel reinforcement is one of the leading causes of deterioration in reinforced-concrete structures, yet conventional inspection methods often detect damage only after it has become visible. Traditional approaches, including **visual assessment, ground-penetrating radar, or ultrasonic testing**, are limited in speed, accuracy, and coverage, often requiring lane closures or other disruptive measures. C-SURE addresses these challenges by deploying **nitrogen-vacancy (NV) diamond magnetometers**, a form of **second-generation quantum technology capable** of detecting **extremely weak magnetic fields associated with the earliest stages of corrosion**.

The project integrates **AI-driven signal processing** to interpret complex quantum sensor data. By applying **machine learning algorithms**, the system can distinguish genuine corrosion signals from environmental noise and vibration effects, producing **actionable maps of structural health**. This combination of quantum sensing and AI provides a step change **in predictive maintenance**, allowing infrastructure managers to **prioritise interventions, reduce repair costs, and minimise disruption to road and rail users**.

During the three-month Phase 1 study, the project will assemble and calibrate a prototype quantum sensing module, model sensor performance in realistic transport environments, and simulate vehicle- and drone-based deployment scenarios. Additionally, C-SURE will assess the **technical feasibility, operational requirements, and potential commercial pathways** for scaling the solution as a **continuous monitoring service** for transport authorities.

By combining the expertise of **Taka Digital Ltd in AI and systems integration** with **Safe Technologia's quantum hardware capabilities**, C-SURE aims to demonstrate that **quantum-enabled infrastructure monitoring** is technically achievable and commercially viable. The outcomes of this study will provide a foundation for **Phase 2 prototype development**, supporting a **future where UK transport assets are monitored in real-time, maintenance is predictive rather than reactive, and public safety is enhanced**.

**C-SURE** exemplifies how **quantum technologies and AI** can be applied to real-world infrastructure challenges, helping to extend asset lifespan, improve network reliability, and strengthen the UK's position as a **leader in applied quantum solutions for transport**.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
