It is a compliance, benchmarking and statistical analysis service that uses real data gathered from hundreds of thousands of mobile devices on an opted-in anonymous data sharing basis. Data is collected by either connecting a device to a separate analytics Appliance or downloading an application onto the device and running compliance and performance tests. The results are uploaded to a Web server and a user can log onto a website to view the results. A dashboard comparing the device at a high level against other related devices, is available as a free to use service for the casual user. More indepth data analysis is available as a premium service. Compliance tests check that the device correctly supports the public APIs that application writers depend upon. The performance tests perform repeated stress tests on the device. The appliance, being 'off device' can perform reliability and performance tests not possible by an application on the device itself. By running on a separate appliance, it can record instances of the device crashing, hanging or restarting during the test and resume testing. The Bench Swarmer appliance runs on cost effective portable hardware and supports multiple mobile device platforms.
