Designed to mix seamlessly with milk or plant-based alternatives, these nutritional powders combine familiar, comforting flavours with advanced, functional ingredients to support muscle retention, cognitive health, and overall well-being. They will offer a natural, tasty alternative to synthetic fortified beverages commonly available on the market. The tea-flavoured variety provides health-promoting antioxidants, which boost immune function and general wellness, while the chocolate-flavoured option provides a universally loved flavour profile. Complementing these core flavours, we will add secondary ingredients such as hemp and lion's mane mushroom enhance both sensory and functionality by introducing nutty and earthy notes along with additional benefits like omega-3 fatty acids and bioactives to support cognitive health. A key innovation in the project is the inclusion of soluble, plant-based vitamin and mineral blends, providing a natural alternative to synthetic micronutrient fortification. This aligns with the clean-label approach of delivering effective nutrition in a format that appeals to the desire and health requirements of older adults. Encapsulation technologies will be employed to preserve the potency and bioavailability of key nutrients and bioactive compounds, ensuring product stability and effectiveness throughout its shelf life. To maintain clean-label integrity, natural emulsifiers such as pectin and chia seed gel will be used to ensure smooth texture and consistency without synthetic additives. The powdered format will offer convenience and flexibility, enabling older adults to easily prepare beverages suited to their dietary preferences and nutritional requirements. High-protein content addresses muscle loss, while balanced fat levels provide sustained energy release, making the innovation formulations and flavours ideal for this older demographic. The project prioritises sustainability, sourcing key ingredients such as tea and hemp from Welsh producers, supporting local and ethical agriculture and ensuring premium quality. Collaborations with AberInnovation, Aberystwyth University, and other regional partners will provide cutting-edge research and technological expertise, fostering innovation in the Mid and North Wales agri-tech cluster. This project aligns with Welsh Government strategies, including the Sustainable Farming Scheme, Food and Drink Vision, and the Innovation Strategy for Wales. By combining familiar flavours, natural health benefits, and sustainable practices, these milkshake powders provide a transformative solution for combating malnourishment in older adults. They aim to enhance nutrition, improve quality of life, and contribute to regional economic growth.
