However, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has identified melamine as a Substance of Very High Concern (SVHC) and in 2023, EU REACH regulations classified it as carcinogenic. Rising concerns about the potential health risks of melamine has created a need for alternative flame-retardant solutions for mattresses and other foam-based domestic furniture applications. Alfrecell are developing a melamine-free polyurethane foam for use in foam mattresses and other furniture applications. This will be compliant with the Furniture and Fire BS5852 (CRIB-5) regulations and will enhance the circularity of the foam products as a recyclable material. Working with supplier Repsol, chemical-based laboratory sample analysis has demonstrated feasibility with the aim now to optimise and scale-up to manufacturing production scale.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
