The goal is to improve how researchers and AI developers access anonymised medical images in a way that is faster, safer, and easier to govern.

Today, NHS Trusts receive growing numbers of requests for access to imaging data, particularly from researchers and companies developing AI models. However, there is no standard way to submit, review, or fulfil these requests. Most approvals are handled manually, and anonymisation is often done by hand. These processes are slow, inconsistent, and difficult to track. As a result, many important projects are delayed or never happen.

DataScrub solves this by giving NHS organisations a secure, structured platform to manage the full process. It includes a request portal for external applicants, an approval dashboard for NHS data teams, and a built-in anonymisation engine that can prepare and deliver the data safely and efficiently.

This builds on Pontiro's existing technology, which has already been used to anonymise more than 1,100,000 NHS images through a live pilot. The project will now expand that work by creating a full request-to-delivery pipeline, allowing data to be shared in a structured and repeatable process.

By making data access faster and more secure, DataScrub helps accelerate innovation in healthcare while maintaining strong protection for patient privacy. It supports the responsible development of AI tools that rely on real-world imaging data to improve diagnosis, treatment, and research.

This project is aligned with the UK's goal of becoming a global leader in trustworthy and transparent AI. It focuses on building practical infrastructure that can be reused across NHS Trusts, creating long-term value for both the health system and the wider UK innovation ecosystem.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
