Most indoor air quality monitors on the market focus on complex data driven results rather than actionable feedback. These products often require technical background knowledge of indoor pollutants including how they are measured and their associated health risks. This leads to a high barrier of entry to the technology even though there is increasing awareness of the importance of indoor air quality.

We are proposing a project to develop a cost effective, human centred air quality monitoring system that engages with each member of a family personally, helping them understand and improve air quality within their home.

**The FamilyAIR system comprises of:**

* A Primary sensor module measuring a range of pollutants
* Modular peripheral sensors tailored to specific locations
* A Smartphone App and for user specific push notifications and recommendations
* An Online Indoor Air Quality Data sharing platform

**Benefits of FamilyAIR:**

**Wide Range of pollutants detected**

* Wide range of pollutants measured including Temperature, humidity, VOCs, and PM0.5, PM1.0, PM2.5, PM10, eCO2, Carbon Monoxide, and Nitrous oxides.

* No other product on the market currently measures both Carbon Monoxide, and Nitrous Oxides even though they have been shown to have damaging health effects.

**Whole Home coverage**

* The system has the ability to gather data from multiple cost effective peripheral sensors to augment the primary sensor data, giving a better overall map of air quality in the home.

* Other solutions either only rely on one sensor or you have to buy multiple expensive sensors.

* The modular nature of the system means that sensors could be upgraded as new technologies become available.

**Improved User Experience**

* We believe that by building profiles of individual family members that we can provide far more relevant and insightful recommendations and advice than current products on the market that only provide simple triggers and alerts.

* By giving air quality a personality we will improve family wide engagement and in turn create a common goal to improve air quality in the home.

**Data Sharing and Visualisation Platform**

* Unique resource where other users, government bodies and academics can view and analyse aggregated sensor data will empower positive action in improving indoor air quality.

During Phase 2 (12 months) of the project we will build several iterations of prototypes alongside running a 6 month real world study with 10 families to validate sensor performance and observe user engagement with the FamilyAIR system.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
