This project will investigate why the seed quality of salad onions and leeks is sometimes poor. Interdisciplinary novel technologies will be used to improve seed quality and uniformity of germination and seedling establishment of Allium varieties. Our idea is that we can develop and apply modern physiological technologies, diagnostic tools, and screens to support the breeding and production of quality seed. This research will provide an initial understanding of the underpinning science causing the seed quality problems of Allium varieties and the applicability of modern biochemical, biomechanical and molecular-physiological technologies to Allium seeds.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
