However, new medicines and better processes for research and development, knowledge transfer and manufacturing are needed to tackle many healthcare challenges and increase resilience in UK value chain. Scientists rely on manual data collection and many experiments take many hours, limiting knowledge as the scientist can't be there all the time. This translates to poor ability to replicate their own and other scientists experiments and limits the knowledge that is transferred as medicines are scaled up for production and mass manufacturing. As such, &amp;pound;5Bn is spent on medicines focused R&amp;amp;D \[UK Parliament, 2022\], but the UK lags in domestic high value manufacturing capability.

Digitalisation and automation of medicines R&amp;amp;D and manufacturing can unlock the capacity for improved experience and process knowledge and support automation for enhanced repeatability and productive manufacturing. **Reach Industries Ltd have developed a machine learning and computer vision powered monitoring and automation platform, Lumi, that can be used throughout the medicines processing chain from research and development to mass manufacturing.** Lumi comprises a 'LabEye' camera/monitoring station that can be mounted anywhere in the laboratory or production environment to capture key insight about the processes being undertaken, for example, the level of liquid in a laboratory vessel, colour changes, safety issues or track human intervention in an automated production environment. The captured insight is the uploaded to the 'Lumi Cloud Platform' where data can be viewed, shared, interrogated and stored via an intuitive dashboard. We can monitor reaction colour, liquid level, key events, safety and progress and we are developing automation to support both laboratory and manufacturing processes. Lumi's usefulness throughout the medicines development and manufacturing supply chain can add coherence to processes and smooth development for increased productivity, less waste and shorter timelines.

Our project is structured to allow us to develop additional Lumi functionality for both the laboratory and manufacturing environments and will allow us to undertake testing and validation activities with our partners CatSci Ltd a drug development and process scale up partner to the pharmaceutical industry.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
