Air pollution is a serious and growing concern across the UK, contributing to tens of thousands of premature deaths each year and worsening conditions such as asthma, heart disease, and mental health disorders. At present, many local authorities lack the tools needed to monitor pollution at a local level, particularly in areas where vulnerable people live, work, or go to school. Existing air quality monitors are often expensive, difficult to deploy at scale, or limited in the range of pollutants they can detect.

The CLEAR project will enhance IVY TECH's existing ORiV environmental sensing platform to create a low-cost, easy-to-deploy solution capable of monitoring a broad range of air quality indicators such as particulate matter, carbon dioxide, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), noise, temperature, and humidity. What sets CLEAR apart is its intelligent cloud-based system, which uses AI to analyse this data in real-time, detect trends, and provide early warnings about poor air quality. These insights will help local councils, businesses, and public sector organisations take timely action to protect people's health and improve local environments.

The project will involve the optimisation, pilot testing and certification of the CLEAR system in a variety of real-world settings, including manufacturing facilities, urban public spaces, rail stations, and schools ensuring that the system is effective, user-friendly, and adaptable to different environments.

CLEAR has the potential to support the UK's broader goals around clean air, climate resilience, and digital innovation. It will provide public authorities with the evidence they need to plan smarter, cleaner, and healthier communities. It also supports a growing demand for data-led environmental reporting as part of net-zero and sustainability initiatives.

By delivering an affordable, scalable, and intelligent air quality monitoring platform, the CLEAR project represents an important step towards empowering local action through better data, improved awareness, and more resilient public health infrastructure.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
