In the UK, this demand is placing significant pressure on NHS mental health services, with over 1.6 million people currently waiting for Talking Therapies — the NHS’s primary programme for delivering evidence-based psychological support.

Dr Julian Medical Group’s digital mental health platform helps address this crisis by connecting patients to qualified therapists via secure video and text-based therapy. We currently support 25 NHS organisations across the UK and consistently deliver strong outcomes — with a recovery rate of approximately 57%, exceeding the national average of around 50% for Talking Therapies services.

However, we identified a key barrier to improving outcomes further: low engagement with therapy “homework” — the exercises patients are encouraged to complete between sessions. These are typically emailed and require printing or manual completion, resulting in only ~40% of patients completing them.

The Innovation
To address this, we have developed a fully digitised suite of therapy homework tools, seamlessly integrated into online mental health platforms. These interactive tools are designed to:

-Increase patient engagement

-Improve recovery outcomes

-Enhance therapist productivity

-Reduce pressure on NHS resources

The tools support core evidence-based therapies, including:

-Behavioural Activation Scheduling (for depression)

-Thought Records Sheets (used in CBT)

-Worry Recognition Tools (for Generalised Anxiety Disorder)

-Behavioural Experiments (for anxiety-related conditions)

Project Scope and Evaluation Plan
We will evaluate these tools with over 100 NHS patients, split between an intervention group (who will use both the new digital tools and standard materials) and a control group (who will continue using traditional email-based homework). Patient engagement, recovery outcomes, and user feedback will be measured to assess the effectiveness of the tools.

Path to Impact
If successful, the tools will be embedded within our own NHS-commissioned platform and also made available as modular digital products that can be integrated into other platforms and services. This innovation has the potential to significantly improve access to effective psychological support, accelerate recovery, and reduce system costs — helping the NHS respond more effectively to a growing mental health crisis.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
