Nonetheless
usage is likely to rise by 16.5 Mb/d, exceeding 102 Mb/d by 2030. Exploration for and the
production of oil is increasingly requiring the use of very deep complex wells, particularly
offshore. Very deep wells are technically difficult, posing significant physical challenges, and
costly to drill and maintain. Meeting the technical challenges requires the development of
innovative robust instrumentation capable of operating at extremes of depth and temperature.
This project seeks to address some of the operating challenges by developing a “downhole”
inspection tool capable of operating in the demanding environment of deep oil wells. Such a
device will enhance both the commercial efficiency and the operational safety throughout the
life of an oil well.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
