security measures. Every year billions of euros are spent on aviation security. One area where
this is a particular concern is in the security control of aircraft galley trolleys and canisters as
identified by IATA (The International Air Transport Association). Ensuring the
trustworthiness of personnel with unimpeded access is a major problem. Misuse of credentials
by authorised employees remains a key concern with widespread internal theft and contraband
transit including guns and drugs among authorised employees. Following discussions with
their client British Airways (BA), ASD have identified a gap in the market for a novel
electronic security seal that can record who has opened a particular aircraft trolley, when and
where.
Some carriers have stock loss rates as high as 10% and the average industry rate is
conservatively estimated to be 4% costing the aviation industry an incredible $57.7m in one
year. Losses experienced by airlines include $800,000 a year for two years to $1 million.
The novel electronic seal could help airlines save millions in stolen duty free goods and could
help reduce security threats. In addition, the associated software application can provide
valuable and real time intelligence to automatically detect patterns and anomalies with the
sealed trolleys and raise alarms.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
