It can impact upon quality of life and can often trigger depression. Metabolic syndrome (combination of diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity) – puts individuals at a greater risk of heart disease, stroke and other conditions affecting blood vessels. It is estimated that there are ~35,000 obesity related deaths in England in each year, accounting for 1 in every 16 deaths (NHS Choices). Modest weight loss yields clinically significant benefits; weight loss of 10% of less can improve the complications most commonly associated with obesity. The concept of consuming fewer calories to lose weight is well known and understood. The project will provide a cost effective measurement of how many calories a person requires. The device will accurately measure metabolic rate. Treatment (calorific intake and exercise regime) will be tailored accordingly.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
