The project combines blockchain technology with sensing (e.g. satellites and remote sensors) and crowd based verification - working with several partner platforms (e.g. Farm-Trace and Farmforce). This will enable UK businesses to prove their environmental impact in line with government regulations and standards, while effectively communicating impact (progress and commitments) to consumers, buyers, employees, investors and governments in a way that can be trusted.

This project builds on a previous successful project focused on carbon verification that gained Provenance over 10 new brands as customers (incl. Absolut, Farmdrop, Rebel Kitchen) and 2 carbon data partners (Carbon Analytics and Makersite). The project will result in tangible advancements to Provenance's software service, as well as an open protocol that can be expanded upon with new impact progress and commitment "proofs". It will enable businesses to verify their environmental impact with integrity and auditability. There are more experimental aspects to the project building on the latest developments in blockchain technology, namely Token Curated Registries (TCRs) to ensure trustworthiness of the verification parties and investigation into Zero Knowledge Proofs(ZKRs) to protect privacy. These two concepts are nascent advancements mainly pioneered in the field of finance (Zcash) and AI (Ocean Protocol) that are yet to be applied to supply chain or provenance use cases. We see a huge - albeit future facing - opportunity for cost saving, increased integrity and scalability for origin, product attributes and proof of impact.

This project is vital to UK businesses tackling several of the greatest environmental problems the world has ever faced and growing through their efforts. We see huge potential for businesses to win in the market through their sustainability efforts - as purposeful brands to be trusted - but without robust means to verify impact, this remains an expensive and complex endeavor carried out by consultants, auditors and a spaghetti of excel sheets.

Provenance was set up in 2013 and is an early pioneer of blockchain technology to prove origin, attributes and impact of consumer products - mainly focused on the food and beverage sectors where they have over 300 businesses using their software services.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
