It will involve preparation of these innovative materials on ceramic micro-hotplate platforms and testing in controlled gas environments where the CO2 level is altered from ambient values to unsafe levels. The new innovative materials will be designed to operate at low temperatures compatible with low-power silicon MEMS substrates, thereby benefiting from low-cost, high-volume, micro-fabrication processes to access wider markets. The technology has wide appeal to established mass markets such as indoor air quality, building ventilation controls, fire detection, horticulture and emerging markets such as smart buildings, domestic gas boiler emissions, perishable goods storage, CO2 capture and storage, vehicle cabin air quality and medical diagnostics. There is also a declared interest from the emerging market in CO2 capture and storage, as the technology operates in high humidity at sub-zero and elevated temperatures. The project will provide clear economic benefits to a small technology company, consolidate a strong link to academia, and help re-establish a mainstream gas-sensing technology in the UK. The technology itself offers both well-being and safety benefits in addition to the potential to improve energy efficiencies in building management systems and in gas-fired appliances.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
