technology, having developed the first battery free TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System). The technical solutions developed for this application have a generic quality; the requirement for self-powered data capture & RF transmission modules which can operate from remote, inaccessible or dangerous locations is hailed as the next logical step in wireless communications. Self-powered sensing systems offer substantial advantages over battery powered systems - higher data capture and transmit rates are made possible by replacing the finite energy source (battery) with the infinite potential provided by PH (Power Harvesting). PH also offers the possibility of reducing waste by replacing short life batteries with long life power harvesting devices. Battery disposal within the EU is regulated by the WEEE directive – it is no longer acceptable to land-fill batteries. In addition to their vastly longer service life, PH devices are WEEE exempt, thereby reducing waste in the first instance and providing easy disposal at the product’s end of life. Other technology elements are supporting the move to harvested power - communications protocols such as Zigbee and Bluetooth are commonplace in most consumer data handling devices (phones, tablets, PC’s); the power requirement of such protocols are too high to be supported by PH. The new protocols nowin development offer excellent functionality at substantially lower power requirements. The thrust of Piezotag’s new product development is to take the IP and knowledge created in the TPMS application and apply it to industrial and consumer oriented products. In support of this, we have identified an industrial application which is ideal for the migration of Piezotag’s TPMS technology – this new application whilst specific also supports further generic development toward PH for consumer products.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
