This is a project part funded by an InnovateUK grant, running over 9 months. The goal is to improve the ability of Turbinia's software to analyse modified forms of proteins. This is a problem Turbinia have been unable to solve with software alone, so we will be working with the mass spectrometry experts at the Royce Institute.

**What Turbinia does, how it helps our customers**

Turbinia is developing a new software platform to help customers in the pharmaceutical and diagnostic industries to develop more and better drugs and tests. The drug discovery process can be thought of like a sales process. You find leads, filter out the poor ones until you only have those with true potential, then work on those until you close the sale. Turbinia's software helps find leads for possible new drugs and diagnostics where it has traditionally been hard to find them and helps ensure that the leads passed on to the next stage are likely to yield results. Our "lead-finding" market is called proteomics.

**Need or challenge addressed by your innovation**

In 2021 the global pharmaceutical market spent $298b on R&D, and yet the FDA only approved 50 new drugs - compared to over 150 per year in the 1970s. We believe that this project will enable us to deliver more candidate biomarkers to the drug discovery process.

**How the Royce Institute will help**

Firstly, with their expertise in this highly specialised field. Secondly by providing test samples (and the data from them) specifically designed to enable Turbinia to understand and solve the analysis problems posed by modified forms of proteins. Finally, by providing comparative analyses run using the current standard techniques and a blinded trial to measure our progress.

**Outcomes of the project for Turbinia**

A first version of the software ready to demonstrate to customers. Honed from iterative loops of prototype development and testing with the Royce.

**Routes to market**

Software sales will be world-wide, direct and via multinational distributors - a model the team is very familiar with in this space.

**Wider impacts**

The product will help customers develop new drugs. If this project enables Turbinia's UK customers to bring just one new drug to market, the value in sales to them could be measured in billions, while saving lives and easing the pressure on the NHS.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
