People who experience symptoms of PAD have a 15 times greater risk of dying from cardiovascular disease, including heart attack and stroke, and a 1 in 4 chance of dying within 2 years. Many of these deaths are preventable if PAD is diagnosed earlier by applying early therapy.
Dialog Devices develop innovative optical technologies to help meet the demand for better healthcare. Advances in opto-electronics now enable the use of natural light to 'see' below the surface of the skin and this technology is revolutionising the way medical conditions are diagnosed and monitored.
This Proof of Market project is designed to establish the market potential for a novel device to detect the presence of Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) in Diabetic patients presenting with highly calcified arteries and patients requiring compression bandaging to treat ulcers. Both these groups are at significant risk of developing PAD and cannot be tested by the ankle brachial pressure index (ABPI) technique, which is the standard technology currently used by healthcare providers. Current screening is based on CDU or MRA scanning at £130 per examination in cost.
The project focuses on market testing with clinicians and key opinion leaders, price testing with a view to maximising revenue across the major EU countries, and determination of design changes and software algorithms to meet clinical needs to enable completion of the design process.
The impact of this novel and affordable healthcare screening tool will be to make screening for these high risk groups of patients practical and affordable for secondary care providers, enabling early diagnosis of PAD leading to lower mortality for patients and substantial cost savings for healthcare providers. It is also expected that once the device is proved in practice with secondary healthcare providers, it will open up significantly larger markets with primary providers.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
