high
temperature structural markets. It uses the “NanoCarb” process developed and patented by
MWIP Ltd. These materials are much cheaper and energy efficient than existing Carbon-
Carbon (C-C) and Carbon Ceramic (CCM) materials. In production, commodity feedstocks
are used at high throughput rates. This project will take the NanoCarb concept and
demonstrate the technical feasibility of producing it in quantity; cost is a key property of
NanoCarb and the demonstration of this property is vital to its exploitation. The objective of
the project is to manufacture a demonstrator annulus, similar to a brake disc, but specifically
designed to explore the manufacturing envelope for a variety of products. To conclude,
limited testing will be carried out to demonstrate the scale-up of properties from the current
60mm diameter coupons.
The project will deliver a low cost, lightweight structural material that is demonstrably
capable of scaling-up to produce a range of products. It is intended to follow-up this project
with Development projects aimed at producing pre-production prototypes in collaboration
with producers and end-users.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
