The project focuses on evaluating cellulose-based materials as renewable, low-impact alternatives to fossil-based synthetics widely used in shoe manufacturing. It aims to assesses cellulose's durability, wear behaviour, moisture response to reduce microplastic pollution and improve material circularity across the footwear supply chain.

**Innovation -** The project introduces a new testing and validation framework for assessing the real-world performance of bio-based materials in footwear. Conventional testing methods are designed for synthetic materials and fail to measure biodegradability, microplastic release, and durability in a comparable way. Unlike existing approaches, BioSole will establish standardised methods to evaluate abrasion resistance, comfort, and wear behaviour of cellulose materials. This represents a step-change in how sustainability claims are scientifically validated, ensuring that next-generation materials meet both performance and environmental standards.

**Project Activities -** The project will be delivered in two structured work phases:

**WP1 - Project Management:** Coordination, risk management, supplier alignment and reporting.

**WP2 - Laboratory Testing & Benchmarking:** Development and validation of abrasion, cellulose microbead lifecycle assessment and comparison against synthetic alternatives.

Throughout, the project will combine laboratory testing with stakeholder feedback, ensuring outcomes are credible, scalable, and aligned with real industry needs.

**Benefits and Impact -** BioSole will have broad benefits for footwear industry. It will contribute to environmental sustainability and cost savings and will help strengthen the UK's position in footwear manufacturing. For customers, the solution will provide healthier, more sustainable footwear choices, supporting comfort, durability, and reduced environmental impact to what is currently available.

More widely, BioSole supports national priorities such as net-zero and skills development. It will also create opportunities for regional growth and contribute positively to economic resilience within the UK.

**Conclusion -** BioSole represents an important step forward in addressing challenges faced in the footwear sector. By combining innovation, collaboration, and a clear focus on positive impact, the project will generate outcomes that benefit businesses, customers, and society, creating a pathway to long-term value and sustainable growth.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
