According to the World Health Organisation, children aged between 5 and 15 should be accumulating an average of 60 minutes of physical activity per day. Currently, 44.6% of children within the UK are meeting this recommended amount, with levels of physical activity decreasing as children progress through primary and secondary school. The increasing prevalence of obesity, low levels of physical activity and high levels of sedentary behaviour has multiple physical, psychological, social, and economic consequences.

My name is Dr Alice Cline, and I'm a behavioural scientist. For four years, I worked on my PhD which involved researching, designing and delivering an intervention called 'Busy Brain Breaks'. Busy Brain Breaks aim to improve children's movement ability and physical activity whilst decreasing the amount of time they spend sitting down throughout the school day.

I worked closely with teaching staff to understand the barriers to doing more physical activity inside the classroom (we don't have enough time, we don't feel confident delivering physical activity, we have too much work to do, the children won't behave).

We discussed what would make it easier to do more physical activity inside the classroom (something that was easy to implement, adaptable, flexible, that was quick, that didn't involve the children leaving the classroom, something that the children enjoyed). I took the insight I had gathered, and used behavioural science theories, frameworks and techniques -- and Busy Brain Breaks was born.

Designed in collaboration with teachers, Busy Brain Breaks aim to improve children's movement ability and physical activity whilst decreasing the amount of time they spend sitting down throughout the school day. Researched, designed, implemented and evaluated as part of a PhD doctorate, the subscription-based business model will enable each classroom to access progressive, evidence-based exercise videos in addition to other resources such as weekly challenges and activity trackers aimed to increase engagement.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
