current tidal environments to plug a missing link in the overall logistics and supply chain for
the marine renewable industry.
The project will enable BOS to test and prove the drilling process that has been designed, in a
variety of rock types. The results will enable BOS to define:
- The steel work and cutting heads required and provide the specification for
cementing/grouting the pile in a range of rock types.
- Further input to the cost benefit model regarding installation costs to end clients.
- Optimised Pile sizes – Standardisation of Pile options to Industry.
- Any new requirement for additional industry codes and standards for the process/procedure
A wet trail of a prototype drilling rig in representative subsea conditions will also be
undertaken in collaboration with SMD, to prove the technical and commercial viability of the
solution.
The project is innovative as;
- The purpose built drill string has been designed to achieve set depth and no more
- The cutting shoe design and generic pile structure is a consumable product that does not get
used again and remains in the hole minimising the volume to be drilled out
-The pile design is a dual barrelled concept to protect and the contain the inner core thus
protecting the inner annular flushing and grouting flow path from blockage in the event of
core fracture and slip.
- The rig can work through high current tide cycles vastly improving the productivity of the
rig compared with existing processes being used within the industry
Economic, social & environmental benefits include:
- Development of a new supply chain
- Development of local infrastructure - including investment & expansion of existing services
- Added value for developers - cost effective installation, faster field developments.
- Reduced environmental impact compared to current methods
- Addition to UK export potential</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
