The pandemic ignited a 77.6% increase in e-commerce and intense demand for rapid fulfilment. This has contributed to warehouse scarcity and a 5% increase in logistics costs. Forecasts indicate increasing market pressures in the next five years, including a global warehouse capacity shortage and a 4.2% increase in rental costs.

If UK-based 3PLs cannot adapt to surging e-commerce demand and the related warehousing needs, the industry will see cost increases of 15-25%, and customers will face higher delivery fees. People from minority ethnic backgrounds are 2.2 times more likely to be experiencing deep poverty compared to White people and are at risk of being disproportionately impacted by rising logistics costs in the UK.

SPRINT is developing BOLT, an AI-powered multi-client fulfilment operations platform and warehouse/order management system (WMS/OMS) that maximises warehouse space utilisation and adapts to client delivery mismatches and unpredictability.

BOLT will improve warehouse utilisation by up to 90% and help 3PLs make loading decisions 300 times faster, thereby doubling efficiency and warehouse capacity without physical expansion. This solution offers unprecedented service flexibility (last-minute/unannounced deliveries) to shippers of goods, including items with strained global supply chains, such as pharmaceuticals, food and manufacturing materials.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
