The annual carbon footprint required to source, treat, and transport this water is equivalent to running 550,000 cars. Furthermore, OFWAT's net zero targets include minimising the energy required to transport clean water. Through digitising the pipeline network, digital twin analysis can optimise the system energy requirements. Furthermore, the analysis can be used to detect, locate, and even predict leakage in near real-time. However, this requires the flexible, mass deployment of smart sensors, which must be powered. The baseline solution consists of frequently replacing single use batteries or laying power cables, neither option being sustainable nor cost effective. The gap for an alternative power source solution therefore exists.

Vysion Technologies has developed a patent pending solution for powering and monitoring remote equipment in smart water networks. The package consists of a hydro turbine energy harvester, a battery storage system, an equipment controller, a communications node, and monitoring software. The renewable energy harvester harnesses the pipe flow energy to provide a local power supply to the equipment, which can be monitored and controlled remotely. This is achieved through our software, where the water utility companies will have secure access to their asset data and sensor node performance.

Our Fast Start project is to design and conduct TRL 7 field trials, for our complete package. This includes trial design, prototype manufacturing and fatigue testing, installation, monitoring, and analysis. The grant funding will be pivotal in bridging the gap between our current technology stage and a commercialised product. Facilitating the opportunity to bring our technology to market would see a profound impact on the water industry's innovation strategy and beyond.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
