The role of hTRPA1 in Pain Sensation

Lead Research Organisation: University of Oxford
Department Name: Interdisciplinary Bioscience DTP

Abstract

Long lasting and recurrent pain is a major health problem worldwide, especially in aging populations. Developing new and effective treatments for pain is hampered by a lack of understanding of the processes that give rise to the feeling of pain. Furthermore, it is not understood hy certain chemicals (such as riot control agents) cause pain. The role of this project is to ascertain the exact mechanisms by which the feeling of pain originates from activation of the protein human TRPA1 (hTRPA1) which will give insights into how to accelerate the development of treatments for pain and also how to more effectively protect humans from the actions of irritant chemicals. Through furthering the understanding of pain and its fundamental mechanisms, this project will address the BBSRC priority areas of bioscience for human health and world-class underpinning bioscience.
