Abstract

Modern antennas are an integral part of our everyday lives. They have a large range of applications ranging from sensing and measurements to mobile communications and broadcasting. In particular, the area of mobile communications is rapidly growing, with an increasing number of users and applications. This requires a new range of antennas with improved gain, bandwidth, and directive properties, with the operating frequency extending to the millimetre range. This could be achieved through structural innovation such as metamaterials or through the use of new materials like graphene and electronic bandgap structures (EBG).

This project will focus on the development of advanced antennas for future applications. This will be achieved through computational methods using simulation software such as CONCEPT II or CST Microwave Studio. The simulation results can then be used to develop prototype antennas that could be experimentally tested to investigate its radiation properties, and further improve the antenna design.
