Tell Us When

Abstract

11.5% of home deliveries fail because nobody is in, resulting in costly redelivery or, for the customer, expensive trips to the dispatching depot. Tell Us When allows customers to better express their delivery preferences, to be better informed of deliver times and to have more reliable delivery time estimates. It will result in a reduction in the number of failed deliveries and, consequently, business, personal and environmental costs.
Tell Us When will use a combination of advanced Vehicle Routing and Scheduling, mobile phone technology, on-truck computers and secure web-based systems to allow customers to "Tell Us When" they want a delivery and logistics service providers to "Tell Us When" it is going to happen.
Tell Us When will provide solutions both to B2C (home delivery) and B2B logistics operations. In the latter case greater reliability in delivery times and accurate pre-advise of impending deliveries will result in a much improved customer service to the customers.
Tell Us When will also be applicable to home service providers - for example washing machine repair men or plumbers, providing them both with a scheduling aid and a better mechanism for their customers to Tell Us When the service should be provided.
Tell Us When (TUW) is about saving time – for the distributor and the customer. By offering a more reliable delivery time, customers may be prepared to accept alternative or wider delivery time windows. 78% of consumers would choose carbon-friendly delivery alternatives if offered (IMRG). TUW combines a web site where customers enter their availability to take deliveries through a calendar-like application – by browser or mobile phone app, and an enhanced version of the Optrak Vehicle Routing System (VRS). TUW will typically be accessed via a vendor’s web site –after on-line ordering. It will be a ubiquitous in the manner of PayPal, allowing customers to log in so their data can be saved (for example repeated activity such as work times). TUW will communicate with other applications, for example, alternative VRS and e-fulfilment platforms. By using the site the customer will grant the supplier a secure, temporary and limited access to their calendar information.
