Abstract
The European Social Science Genetics Network (ESSGN) brings together seven academic beneficiaries with a shared interest in social science genetics, i.e., in incorporating genetic information to improve our understanding of age-old questions in the social sciences, such as the origins of inequality, the 'nature versus nurture' debate, and the extent to which the interplay between environments and genes is important in shaping individuals' lives. The consortium consists of an interdisciplinary group of academics, as well as seven non-academic partners committed to using data science to address inequalities in life chances. There is an urgent need for training in social science genetics due to recent technological advances in genetics, the intricacies of using genetic data, and the growing availability of such data in surveys traditionally studied by social scientists. Our aim is to train the next generation of social scientists in the responsible and technically correct use of genetic data and in objective communication about what can and cannot be learned from working with genetic data in the social sciences. The project will go beyond the state-of-the-art (i) by using Europe's most comprehensive multigenerational databases to separate direct genetic effects from parental genetic and socio-economic factors that shape the rearing environment; and (ii) by exploiting the large toolbox of causal inference methods used in econometrics and statistics to estimate the extent to which environments causally protect individuals with genetic disadvantages. We will (1) analyse to what extent genetic ('nature') and environmental ('nurture') factors contribute to equality of opportunity and intergenerational mobility, and (2) establish how nature and nurture jointly shape inequalities in life chances. As such, our programme of research provides novel and exciting opportunities to social scientists to deepen our understanding of how inequalities in life chances are shaped.

| Description | The PhD researcher Vincent Straub and PI Professor Melinda Mills had an exceptional year in terms of output and impact. Scientific output exceeded our expectations with 7 publications in total by Mills and Straub in 2024 and 2025. This included key publications in the journal Nature, Nature Ageing, Nature Human Behaviour, Nature Reviews Urology and Communications Psychology. These covered key topics within the ESSGN programme of research. For example, a Nature Aging review examined the genetics of both female and male reproductive traits and their relationship to health and longevity. A Nature article highlighted the importance of family-based sampling for biobanks. Another key Nature Human Behaviour article conducted the first ever GWAS (genome wide association study) of occupational status and the importance of environmental interplay and intergenerational transmission. Key collaborations were forged which included first, a secondment of Straub to ODISSEI, Open Data Infrastructure for Social Science and Economic Innovations in the Netherlands. Second, Mills became a Trustee of the UK Biobank and member of the Ethics Advisory Board and third, Mills remained a member of the Scientific Advisory and Ethics Board of Our Future Health and became a Research Ambassador with Straub being named a Research Scholar. Both the UK Biobank and Our Future Health are key resources for the ESSGN Network. |
| Exploitation Route | We published one Research Software package called UK jobs, linked to our Nature Human Behaviour published study, which allows people using the UK Biobank to properly prepare and code occupational status. This is now being used as a wider resource for all researchers using the UK Biobank. |

| Title | R Package to create Occupational Status in UK Biobank |
| Description | Occupation plays a pivotal role in an individual's social and economic life, and is often one of the first topics of conversation when meeting someone new. Knowing a person's job can provide valuable insights into their technical skills, economic prospects, general social standing, and how they spend much of their time (Hauser and Warren 1997). Occupation is a long-term, stable indicator of an individual's circumstances, including income, wealth, and consumption (p. 60ff, Lambert and Griffiths 2018). Occupation is strongly linked to wellbeing: Workers who occupy lower positions on the occupational ladder tend to report worse health, have a higher probability of disability, and die at an earlier age than workers who occupy higher positions on the occupational ladder (Ravesteijn, Kippersluis, and Doorslaer 2013). Furthermore, late-career exposure to high physical strain and low job control has been found to be comparable to the average health decline that occurs as a result of ageing (Ravesteijn, Kippersluis, and Doorslaer 2018). Job satisfaction is also an important factor that plays a role in influencing the health of workers (Faragher, Cass, and Cooper 2013). The UK Biobank (UKB, Sudlow et al. 2015) is a large-scale biomedical research project consisting of a national database containing health information on over 500,000 UK inhabitants. The aim of the project is to improve the health of future generations by providing researchers with a valuable resource for studying the causes of disease. Information on UKB respondents' was measured using the SOC2000 structure (Elias et al. 2000) and occupation is available for the majority of cases. In this package, we provide a collection of helpful external information on occupations that can be merged to UKB via SOC2000. This includes the three occupational status metrics CAMSIS, SIOPS and ISEI, as well as a mapping of SOC2000 to the international ISCO-88 occupational classification. Furthermore we make information on occupational means the big 5 personality dimensions, risk taking, mental health, gratification delay and self efficacy based on estimates by Wolfram (2023) available. |
