Description Core research studies based at Swansea University under this first tranche of the EPSRC Strategic Partnership contributed key outcomes to all five technical themes / work packages:
WP1 HP and IP Turbine Blades
WP2 LP Turbine Blades
WP3 HP Turbine and Compressor Discs
WP4 Shafts
WP5 Cross Cutting Materials Research Techniques
Swansea was also active under WP6 Public Engagement, contributing to local outreach events and core initiatives led by the Naked Scientist team.
Supplementary research projects were aligned to the core research through approximately 30 postgraduate PhD/EngD studies.
Swansea research focussed on the mechanical characterisation of novel and established nickel based superalloys, gamma titanium aluminides, novel refractory alloys and advanced steels. Fundamental understanding of deformation mechanisms, fatigue and creep behaviour of all these systems was gathered at temperatures ranging from ambient to 1000 degrees centigrade. Mechanical data were generated to support engineering component design and service lifing methodologies of relevance to a range of sponsoring companies.
Key advances in knowledge were established in the areas of:
1. High temperature corrosion mechanisms in nickel based superalloys
2. Establishment of the Wilshire Equations for the accurate prediction of long term creep behaviour
3. The application of small punch test techniques for the assessment of novel Vision 20 alloys in low volumes
4. Dwell fatigue response in nickel disc alloys
5. Composition and process optimisation of F1E advanced steel
Exploitation Route The design quality mechanical data generated at Swansea University will be employed at Rolls-Royce for the design and lifing of safety critical aero-engine components. As a direct result of the core research, overarching improvements to engine efficiency and the associated reduction in specific fuel consumption (SFC) together with the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions will provide wide ranging environmental and societal benefits.
In particular, as a direct result of Swansea Core Research, the company has recently, successfully demonstrated a novel gamma titanium alumidie alloy for low pressure turbine applications based on characterisation of fatigue and creep characteristics and fatigue crack threshold philosophies.
Novel Vision 20 disc compositions have been down selected and optimised subsequent to mechanical assessments conducted at Swansea. Information to support this iterative materials development has been fed back to Rolls-Royce and Cambridge University in particular.
Mechanical properties and the influence of process parameters have been closely monitored by co-sponsors such as Timet UK and fed back into their alloy optimisation programmes.
Through public dissemination of this research material (International Journal and Conference outputs) the wider engineering community will also benefit from our findings.
The pipeline of highly qualified postgraduate and postdoctoral recruits from the Strategic Partnership into the sponsoring companies, including Rolls-Royce, Timet UK, SMaRT and TWI together with the wider UK engineering sector (AWE, JLR, MIRA, CISCO etc) is one of the most significant outcomes from this scheme.

Since 2018, data and fundamental understanding of hot corrosion mechanisms in nickel based superalloys, generated at Swansea UTC under this Strategic Partnership award, have been employed by Rolls-Royce in their efforts to alleviate in-service degradation of high pressure turbine aerofoils in the Trent 1000 fleet. This is a highly visible issue for the company with significant commercial impact.
