BESiDE - The Built Environment for Social Inclusion in the Digital Economy

Abstract
BESiDE's research asks the question: How can the built environment facilitate physical activity and wellbeing in care homes? Our goal is to transform the network of stakeholders involved in care environments into a virtuous cycle of design improvement, in which architects, professional bodies, academics, policy makers, charities, and care home providers are all motivated to pursue improvement in the built environment for older adults.
With changes in population demographics resulting in a growing number of care homes, economic, health and ethical considerations demand that attention be directed to effective means of creating an enabling built environment to provide older adults with healthy and socially fulfilling lives. This research addresses a significant knowledge gap focussed on measures to mitigate problems and enhance the experience of older people within the built environment.
A fundamental impact of ageing is that a person's needs and abilities change; however, the built environment is failing to respond to these changes. Despite current legislative statutes and design guidance, little is known from empirical evidence (generated by older people, their family and care providers) about enabling and disabling elements of the built environment. These elements have never been defined to support the advancement of building and digital technology design. Through systematic analysis of the failings and successes of older people's care environments, BESiDE research will identify how better-informed building design can facilitate greater mobility, physical activity, social connectedness and wellbeing of older people. BESiDE's aims are to:
1) Actively involve and inform professional practices of architecture and design through research focussed on failings and successes of the built environment (internal and external) across the experience of ageing.
2) Impact professional practice through developing digital technologies within the built environment to promote greater mobility, improved quality of life, physical activity and connectivity of older people.
3) Inform policy, through BESiDE's Advisory Board and Project Partners, as to what designs and digital interventions encourage activity and how these can be engineered to facilitate increased wellbeing in older people.
Collaboration across disciplines of computing, architecture, healthcare, medicine of old age and design will drive this work forward and build the UK's capability in supporting older people within the built environment. Engagement with older people and stakeholders will shape understanding of barriers to wellbeing within the built environment.

Planned Impact
This research addresses critical challenges facing designers of the built environment; particularly older people's care environments. Through a multi-faceted analysis of environments specifically designed for older people, BESiDE will provide a practical, usable and holistic understanding of design for wellbeing, ageing, and long-term mobility for use within the general context of the built environment. To effect this transformation and to achieve impact, the BESiDE team has planned targeted activities. Within the context of care homes, BESiDE's Impact Aims are to:
1. Train professionals as to better design of the built environment (internal and external) for ageing.
2. Inform policy change as to what built environment designs encourage activity and how these can be engineered to facilitate increased wellbeing in older people.
Train Built Environment Professionals

Our findings will be disseminated to the professional community through design briefs, a design toolkit, a series of professional training and demonstration days, and workshops. Registered Architects are required to undertake 35 hours of Continual Practice Development (CPD) training per year for their professional accreditation. CPD training is used to aid architects in gaining skills, knowledge and awareness, with the ultimate aim of incorporating new work practices to build their business. BESiDE will contribute to this development, initiating a training seminar for the current and next generation of architects through a Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) validated CPD program. The findings of BESiDE will directly contribute to core RIBA curriculum topics and provide essential knowledge that will give architects and designers the insight to create enabling environments while preventing future expensive retrofits when buildings fail to meet the needs of older users.
Inform Policy Change

In addition to private care home providers who are constantly assessing how to enhance their environments, the wellbeing of older people is a vitally important issue for policy across health, housing and social care, and local authorities. We will host demonstration days for policy makers, health and social practitioners and providers. This impact will be measured by tracking our interactions with government and policy makers, the engagement of these stakeholders in BESiDE's demonstration days and Advisory Board, and specific policy citations to BESiDE findings.
Expert Advisors

To ensure that these activities have the desired impact, we have assembled a consortium of Expert Advisors from the professional communities we plan to address. Confirmed members of our Advisory Board include three representatives from Architecture, including a Consultant from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA); four members representing Care professionals, including managers from our care home Project Partners, and a person from the Care Inspectorate; a Clinical professional, a Professor in Health Care Research, who works to enable quality research in care homes; a senior industry researcher working in the healthcare domain; and two Government representatives with interests in ageing and healthcare.
In addition to these Advisory Board members, BESiDE will ensure strong input from older adults, seeking input from residents of care home, members of our university panel of older adults, and representatives from charitable organisations that work with older adults.

| Description | A fundamental impact of ageing is that a person's needs and abilities change. However, the built environment is failing to respond to these changes. BESiDE was a multi¬disciplinary research project that investigated themes of ageing, wellbeing, and digital technologies within the context of built environment design. The goal was to understand how to design an appropriately supportive built environment for older people. Key findings were the uncovering of a number of elements in care home design that thwarted the physical and social activities of residents. Additional work sought to understand roles that technology could play in improving care home life. This work involved considerations of physical activity and acceptance of technology by older adults. |

| Description | BESiDE addresses critical challenges facing designers of the built environment in older peoples' care environments. Its impact aims are to provide information for professionals on better design of the built environment (internal and external) for ageing. This is focussed around three areas: 1. Built-Environment Professionals who are designing these environments. Towards this goal, talks and publications have been directed at professional magazines, conferences, and exhibit venues geared towards architects and other built environment professionals. Such project activities include showing BESiDE at high-profile events such as the Ecobuild conference for built environment professionals, the Dundee Design Festival, and the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland. 2. The Care Provision Industry who are procuring, managing, maintaining and operating care home environments. Towards this goal, talks and publications have been directed at magazines and workshops geared to care industry professionals. Our BESiDE Advisory Board, which includes representatives from care homes and government care home regulatory entities, has been instrumental in making connections for us with these stakeholders. Our research interactions at individual care homes have produced unanticipated impact, with one of the homes adopting a craft programme modelled after our methods. We have engaged with care home and health professionals in a number of ways including a magazine article in the Scottish Care Bulletin about care home buildings supporting health and wellbeing, a presentation at a national event on Advancing Excellence in Healthcare, a presentation at the Dundee Smart Care Convention, and participation in Age Scotland National Conference. 3. Policy. BESiDE also has as a goal to inform policy change as to what built environment designs encourage activity and how these can be engineered to facilitate increased wellbeing in older people. Through our Advisory Board, we have engaged with policy at the level of the Scottish government and notably participated in an advisory capacity for the Dundee City Council and as a committee member for the RIBA group 'Architects for Change.' |

| Description | This site contains information on the gathering of data (2016-17) from the residents of care homes for older people in the U.K. The study created a novel visual game activity to enhance engagement with residents, and a redesigned ethical consenting approach to be more accessible, equitable and inclusive. Described are the tools used to develop a visual method of interacting with vulnerable people to better facilitate interviews with them. This includes the research materials, the original images, the process undertaken and lessons learned. |

| Results and Impact | CENSIS, the Innovation Centre for Sensor and Imaging Systems was described as a game changer for Scotland when it launched in April 2013. Dr Sebastian Stein gave a 20-minute talk on BESiDE's approach to, lessons learned from, and open challenges in sensor-based research with residents in elderly care. The intended purpose was to inform business leaders in the sensor systems sector about opportunities and challenges working within the care sector, particularly with residents in elderly care. In his closing remarks, Ian Reid, CEO of CENSIS, highlighted that Sebastian's talk stimulated his thinking about ethical issues and interpersonal relationships involved in sensor-based research in the care sector. Representatives from multiple housing associations expressed interest in the BESiDE sensor work and in discussing the possibility of collaborative follow-up projects. Follow-up meetings with a commercial research studio discussed the experiences of working in care homes in more detail and scoped potential future collaboration opportunities. |

| Results and Impact | Marianne Dee was invited to give a presentation to the Computing User Centre Group at the University of Dundee. The User Centre Group is based at the Queen Mother building at the University of Dundee. It is a friendly and informal computer club for over 60s - a space where older people and technology meet. Marianne presented an overview of the findings from the supported conversations with residents of care homes to the group of older adults. The talk reported on a brief description of the methods used to encourage engagement and open conversations with care home residents and a comparison of findings from interviews with visitors to care homes and residents of care homes. Audience feedback was focused on aspects of care home lifestyle that they had not thought of previously. People discussed how the built environment was important for residents to manage their personal way of life within communal living. They were interested in the ways in which different types of seating and different spaces could improve their ability to visit in a care home. They also talked about the lack of WiFi and the consequent limitations of visitors sharing digital stories and images with their residents. |

The talk was part of the inaugural Dundee design festival and as such, it attracted a varied audience all with some level of interest in design. This included some architects and architectural academics and people from a wide range of backgrounds, there were representatives from local government, Maggie's, local Rotary club, and V&A Dundee amongst others. The talk was also featured by Design Week as one of the top 5 things to see at the festival. | Results and Impact | Professor Marion Mcmurdo presented a public talk as part of Dundee Science Festival 2014, to a full auditorium at the Dundee Science centre. Professor Marion McMurdo talked about about living better with arthritis, about managing your medicines, and about maximising your memory in later life. An experienced hospital consultant specialising in the Medicine of Old Age and head of Ageing and Health at Dundee University, Professor McMurdo gave an informal, interactive talk. The talk was followed by a lively 35 minute Q&A session. Prof. McMurdo reported that "The questions were of a standard I would welcome more often from junior medical undergraduates". . |

| Results and Impact | BESiDE co-design researchers, Chris Lim and Sara Nevay, presented some of their work at Dundee Smart Care Convention at Caird Hall Dundee. Having worked with older adults to customise and redesign wearable sensors to make them more acceptable and appealing for use in everyday life, our researchers showcased sample bespoke wearable designs as well as some design tools that were used to support ideation and creative development. This free event was promoted by Dundee Voluntary Action attracted those involved in health or social care and with an interest in advances in technology, the Internet of Things, or the developments in this field. Showcasing and discussing this work with other local researchers, organisations and visitors whose interest is also in promoting, supporting and innovating within health, wellbeing and care settings reinforced the value of our co-design process, highlighting the importance of usability and bringing the voice of the user to the fore. |

| Results and Impact | Dr McIntyre was awarded best non-domestic paper by the Building Research Establishment (BRE) for her paper entitled 'A Case Study of BIT-Kit: A Method Uncovering the Impact buildings have on People' which she presented on 4th March 2014 at 'EcoBuild 2014', ExCeL, London. The Ecobuild conference bring in provocative, educational and inspirational speakers that will inspire manufacturers, designers, developers, housebuilders and contractors. As part of Ecobuild 2014, the Building Research Establishment (BRE) and UBM Built Environment partnered and launched a research programme focussed on investigating a growing theme in building science - 'the impact of the built environment on wellbeing'. This included a competition to find the best recent research into wellbeing. Dr Lesley McIntyre submitted a paper entitled: 'A Case Study of BIT-Kit: A Method Uncovering the Impact Buildings have on People', which was awarded 'best non-domestic paper'. This established a new relationship with the Building Research Institute. BRE released a press release and the event was covered by Facilities Management Journal and Building4Change. The full paper was then published by the Facilities Management Journal Website. New relationship established with the Building Research Institute. |

| Results and Impact | BESiDE were at Ecobuild 2017 showcasing our findings and methods. It's the UK's largest and number one event for specifiers across the built environment. BESiDE shared key findings from our project investigating the effect of the built environment on the everyday life and the wellbeing of care home residents. We demonstrated some of our innovative methods for capturing the voice of care home users and collecting data on the patterns and details of building usage. We discussed our findings with many people including those involved in property development and care. Many diverse groups of people were interested in the methods we used for collecting evidence of how well buildings in use perform for their users. Researchers engaged in conversation with industry delegates and printed research summaries were taken away by interested parties. Approx 50 individuals provided contact details for further information. |

As part of the RIBA Perspectives in Architecture lecture series, Lesley McIntyre was invited to present her work on Selwyn Goldsmith (funded by an RIBA Research TRUST Award) and give an overview of the research we are currently undertaking within the BESiDE Project. This was followed by a lengthy discussion in relation to user and accessibility research in architecture As a direct result, Lesley was invited to write the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography entry for Welwyn Goldsmith, she was also asked to contribute information on Goldsmith to a House of Commons engagement website as part of Parliament Week. |

AfC's mission is to provide strategic leadership and advice on ED&I matters for the RIBA; to be the go to group on ED&I matters for the RIBA; and to oversee implementation of the ED&I action plan. AfC aims to encourage and celebrate diversity; to support the creation of inclusive, study, work and networking environments for practitioners; to champion equality and challenge unequal treatment; to champion inclusive design; and to engage the profession and public on a contemporary understanding of practice. Group members are expected to attend 3 meetings annually and to respond to occasional email requests for input into RIBA research projects and responses to government consultations. The meetings are an opportunity to discuss current industry ED&I activity and policy issues and to provide input in relevant RIBA ED&I activities. How the built environment can support residents' wellbeing through better visiting times. Issue 54 Spring 2014. p26. Scottish Care Bulletin is distributed to every care home in Scotland as the main newsletter for care workers. This briefing paper reported on early findings from interviews with visitors to care homes. It highlights key themes from 13 interviews in which visitors report on how important building and design can be in creating an environment which supports a homely atmosphere for their residents. The paper points to the importance of visitors and how welcome they find a choice of visiting spaces, which allow for privacy when necessary, as well as their overall desire to have a home that supports relaxed behaviour, common in a domestic setting. . |

| Results and Impact | Around 90 older adults from across Scotland visited the School of Computing at the University of Dundee for a special event to celebrate their work helping researchers to develop more inclusive technologies. The Social Inclusion through the Digital Economy (SiDE) User Pool, based in Dundee and including members across Scotland supported 30 academics to complete 50 research activities over the last five years. The User Pool is comprised of individuals who volunteered to help research into the digital exclusion of older adults and of people with disabilities. The BESiDE team had a booth which displayed a poster of findings from interviews with visitors to care homes as well as the results of novel Co-design work including artefacts from our working methods, a poster and a power point presentation to encourage people to stop and chat with the researchers. The SiDE User Pool was used to recruit participants for both of these research activities. We talked with many of the participants of ours and other research studies about the work we have been doing and the results that have come out of their contributions. This was further publicised by the University and the School of Computing. |

| Results and Impact | BESiDE was represented with a demo and information booth at the SiDE Showcase on the 15th of January in the Banqueting Hall of the Newcastle Civics Centre. Sebastian Stein introduced the project to members of the Voice North user pool, industry representatives and fellow academics, which was well received. He also presented our latest findings on activity analysis of care home residents. Sebastian Stein received very encouraging feedback from members of the Voice North user pool, industry representatives including Microsoft and Your Home Newcastle, and fellow academics. All parties were very positive, highlighting the currently unmet needs and issues BESiDE aims to address. Sebastian made connections with a Microsoft team who are currently looking into care home resident rehabilitation using similar wearable technology, and with Your Home Newcastle, who are leading a project that aims to provide care home residents with internet access. |
