| Results and Impact | The workshop jointly organised by the Subject Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies (LLAS) and CRCEES focused on practical issues involved in the setting up and delivery of modules and programmes in lesser taught languages. It covered themes such as: Getting started with a new module in a lesser taught language, teaching ab initio, and introducing students to content modules. Participants also had the opportunity to experience a taster session in a lesser taught language. |

| Results and Impact | ESRC Festival of Social Science Schools Event: 'Migration, identity and integration: new and old communities in Glasgow' This event brings together secondary schoolchildren from Central and East European (CEE) migrant communities and local Scottish children from schools across Glasgow to discuss their experiences. We also aim to ascertain if there are specific gendered aspects to the experience of migrant communities. We hope that the CEE and Scottish schoolchildren will benefit from exploring their commonalities/differences and in doing so hope to foster a greater understanding between these communities. We also hope that the schoolchildren will benefit from being in a University environment and being introduced to social sciences / area studies research and be encouraged to think seriously about applying to University to study these subjects. The event should help to break down barriers across the various CEE migrant communities and also between these and the Scottish schoolchildren and will explore the gendered aspects of migrant schoolchildren's experiences. |

| Results and Impact | This major international workshop was organised by CRCEES postdoctoral fellow Dr Laura Cashman (Glasgow, 2007-08), who attracted additional funding from the British Academy and the Czech Centre in London. Drawing on the considerable body of expertise on Czech and Slovak studies at the Universities of Glasgow, Strathclyde and the West of Scotland, the event attracted 27 speakers from Europe, North America and Australia, and was attended by 50 delegates. Selected papers from the conference have been published as a special issue of Europe-Asia Studies in December 2008. |

| Results and Impact | Dr. Sally N. Cummings and Professor Raymond Hinnebusch discussed their new book entitled, "Sovereignty After Empire: Comparing the Middle East and Central Asia". This book is a unique systematic comparison of empires and of their consequences for sovereignty in the middle East and Central Asia brings theory on empire and sovereignty to bear on empirical variation across the two regions. The novel approach to understanding the political structures of states in two significant areas of the non-European world offers an important comparative discussion of post-imperial development and sovereignty. It raises a clear set of research questions about variations of imperial practice and puts forward and attractive and persuasive case that imperial legacy has been an important variable in the post-independence period. |

| Results and Impact | This exhibition is a rare display of Soviet posters from 1943-45 from The University of Nottingham's historic collections. It introduced the extraordinary set of posters produced by Soviet painters and writers as responses to the war news channelled by the Soviet Telegraphic Agency (TASS). Relatively few of the originals survive but thanks to Professor Cynthia Marsh. a world-class collection of 129 was made available to the public. The exhibition was accompanied by a series of public lectures and events for school pupils. |

The day offered the opportunity to take a look at the exhibition under the guidance of experts in Russian culture, history and art. Speakers led discussion sessions to explore the historical, literary and artistic context that inspired the poster themes and images. |

| Results and Impact | Presented at workshop on Ethical and Methodological Issues in Area Studies. This one-day event builds on the recently established LBAS (Language-based areas studies) Pathway as part of the SGS DTC initiative. It aims to facilitate deepening linkages between CRCEES and CASAW as the two LBAS Centres of Excellence at the heart of the DTC Pathway. It will bring together insights from East European and Arabic Studies, but also allow for participation by students in SGS and other UK DTCs working on area studies or region-specific themes within other pathways (in this regard we anticipate strong interest from the other UK LBAS Centres of Excellence in East European and East Asian Studies). The event will also draw on the resources of the wider CRCEES and CASAW networks by bringing speakers from our partner institutions south of the border. |
