Impact I was leading a section on the ISAM (International Society on Aerosols Medicine) Standardization of techniques for using planar (2D) imaging for aerosol deposition assessment of orally inhaled products. This document has now internationally standardized how imaging is/should be undertaken of patients with inhaled drug (a lot of pharmaceutical companies are doing such studies wih new inhaler drugs) The sub-committee produced a supplement in JAMPDD (Volume 25, Supplement 1, 2012) to provide practical guidance and recommendations to standardize the field of deposition assessment using radionuclide imaging.

Title Small Airway Physiological Tests
Description As part of my award, I have learnt about techniques to assess small airways physiology with novel non-invasive tests from a world leading expert -Dr Sylvia Verbanck, Dept of Physiology & Physics, University of Brussels, Belgium. I have subsequently developed and established these comprehensive techniques for small airways assessments in our institution and in the UK.
Type Of Material Physiological assessment or outcome measure
Provided To Others? No
Impact My research output from this collaboration was 1) an oral podium presentation at the European Respiratory Society (ERS) Barcelona 2010 (A5159). 2) manuscript assessing the ageing lung - Verbanck, S., Thompson, B.R., Schuermans, D., Kalsi, H., Biddiscombe, M., Stuart-Andrews, C., Hanon, S., Van Muylem, A., Paiva, M., Vincken, W., Usmani, O., "Ventilation heterogeneity in the acinar and conductive zones of the normal ageing lung" Thorax. 67, (2012), 789-95. 3) I have taught the skills I have learnt to others in my research group (physicist, nurses, and clinical fellows) and this training opportunity has added value and built research capacity and research capability. 4) I have been invited onto the steering committee of the World Allergy Organisation (WAO) small airways working group - a dedicated scientific group for clinicians, researchers and educators around the world to be guided on the most relevant scientific, clinical and educational resources on small airway disease.

Title Throat Model
Description I have also collaborated with Dr Verbanck in Brussels to assess aerosol deposition in an in vitro upper airways realistic silicone throat models. This throat model we believe will help researchers understand about inhaled drug delivery in the throat - where the throat is a major obstacle to inahled aerosol deposition in the lungs.
Type Of Material Model of mechanisms or symptoms - in vitro
Provided To Others? No
Impact We have published a manuscript on our model We are now (oct 2014) enaging in computational fluid dynamic work to refine our model

PI Contribution I was approached by Prosonix, a company involved in improving chemical formulations of inhaled drug, to utilise cell based models in my research group to test their inhaled compounds.
Collaborator Contribution Prosonx supplied drugs and we received a grant for a Post Doc for 1 year.

Results and Impact I gave a talk on "Biomedical careers" to Yr12 Biology students from Paddington Academy London (March 2013) at the Hammersmith Campus.

This was a great honour for me, as this was my old secondary school that I attended and to my surprise, I met up with my former biology teacher.

Results and Impact I designed and organised a teaching half-day interactive session on 'Hospital Respiratory Tests' to A-level student communities (locally) under-represented in Higher Education and international school students attending ICL Summer School programme. The aim of the session was to explain the investigations and the different hospital personnel that could be encountered for patients with a respiratory disorder/lung condition.
I used this opportunity to discuss the interaction between research and bedside medicine and offered career advice, in particular emphasising the important role of non-clinical staff. I explained my role as a Clinical Academic, and involved my non-clinical research staff (PhD students, Medical Physicist, Respiratory Physiologist) and clinical staff (Clinical Research Nurse) to teach and be involved in the session.

After the session, I was e-mailed by a student who had been inspired by my session and the coverage of my scientific research by the BBC, and requested my help to undertake his extended science project on 'Asthma'.

Results and Impact I attended the launch of the ICL Reaching Further Programme (Feb 2013) recently successfully funded by the RCUK School University Partnership Initiative, in which I gave my expression of interest in the initiative when the ICL call for the bid was made (Aug 2012) led by Sir Robert Winston.

Following the launch meeting, I was contacted by Lucia Perez (Science Programme Officer) to attend the RCUK-Working Group to suggest my ideas for outreach.

This meeting involved headteachers, governors, teachers and members of schools' science and mathematics teams working alongside College and Exscitec personnel to translate the RCUK Reaching Further proposal into tangible activities to benefit both the schools' and university communities.

Working Group were interested in my proposal and I was asked to undertake at workshop at the World Summer School STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Medicine) Programme in July 2013

Results and Impact NIHR Fellow Welcomes Former School to
Biomedical Research Unit

Dr Omar Usmani, NIHR Career Development Fellow, invited his former sixth form college, Paddington Academy, formerly North Westminster Community School, for an afternoon of interactive clinical activities and advice about careers in the NHS and in research.

Held at the NIHR Respiratory Biomedical Research Unit, 16 and 17 yr old students were given the opportunity to try their hands on clinical equipment used for diagnosing patients with lung disease at the Royal Brompton Hospital including spirometry and pulse oximetry.

The importance and impact of medical research in the NHS was also discussed and Dr Usmani talked about his NIHR funded research through Imperial College London on improving inhaled drug delivery to patents with lung disease.

As well as hands on demonstrations, pupils were also given a flavour of the type of careers that exist within hospitals. Staff who took part included a PhD fellow (Dr Will McNulty), a senior research nurse (Ms Sally Meah), a medical physicist (Dr Martyn Biddiscombe) and a PhD scientist (Ms Natasha Madge). All answered questions in a Q&A session about their job roles, education, career pathways and their individual contributions to medical research.

Dr Usmani, who was a pupil at the school himself, remarked on why it's so important to connect with schools "Working with schools helps generate interest and excitement among young people in research. We hope that by showing them the potential that research has to change lives, they as individuals will take part by seizing on the vast array of career opportunities available"

After my talk I had e-mail from 2 pupils wanting to follow up on a career in nursing and dentistry
I was invited to Paddington Academy's open day (Sep 2014) - where ~15 students presented their summer's interships
Following this, I have been invited onto Paddington Academy's Local Advisory Board
