Description Radicalisation is a complex and shifting process, deeply embedded in everyday private life and political-economic realities. In my research, I wanted to know how people who had ended up in prison because of their 'radical' activism (violent and non-violent) explained their motivations and made sense of what led to their actions. What I found was that in a number of different cultural-political contexts, certain factors emerged as commonly raised key factors in these stories. These related to things like family histories of resistance or stand-taking (often on different issues or adopting conflicting ideologies that were seen by the individual in question as somehow following a similar trajectory), gender identities, sexualities and intimacy, friendship and kinship networks, becoming educated, feeling powerful, feeling cool, consuming, having fun. While global-political injustices were important, these ideological factors were more contextual, and causes/groups joined or acted upon incorporated many of these previous ordinary, everyday personal practices.
Exploitation Route There could be more exploratory and comparative research of this type expanded to other historical/international contexts to better understand the sense-making processes of those who get involved in such activities, and what the external factors are in which what are often law-abiding, high flying members of society take such actions and become the objects of such condemnation and fear.
