STFC Capital Bid from the HEP Group to STFC 2013

Lead Research Organisation: Lancaster University
Department Name: Physics

Abstract

Particle physics requires fast, interactive computing to analyze the data collected at the experiments and to design future experiments. it also requires specialist equipment to test new detectors at the temperatures and pressures they will endure in future experiments. This grant will allow us to deal with rapidly growing data collections, and permit us to seek rarer and more subtle new physics effects; and will allow us to test new physics models by designing future experiments, which may also led to potential developments of use to commerce and industry.
Future long baseline neutrino experiments, including LBNE, are all investigating low temperature detectors. The cryogenic presure vessel system requested will allow Lancaster to engage in device development and testing within this programme.

Planned Impact

This bid acts as an enhancement to the impact summary of the previous consolidated grant award. The equipment may enable the development of detectors of wider application, including commercial applications. All of the activities enabled will be be able to engage in enhanced outreach activities, including public talks, colloquia, schools talks and press releases.
