Abstract
Using newly catalogued archival material on the British Antarctic research station Halley Bay dating from the 1950s I
wish to explore the institutional, political and technical dimensions of Cold War British field science with a focus on
practices related to geomagnetic mapping. I wish to relate my findings to historiographical and theoretical debates
emerging from the environmental humanities about the relative primacy of human social and natural material forces in
discussing environmental issues.
