Listening for Race: Audiobooks and the African Literary Reader

Lead Research Organisation: University of Leeds
Department Name: School of English

Abstract

This project will push the boundaries of traditional modes of scholarship and contemporary literary theory in its form and content, utilising postcolonialist strategies and the audiobook format itself to critique the production and reception of African literary audiobooks. Unlike print, manuscript, theatre, and film, the audiobook genre remains relatively under-researched and under-theorized. My project fills a gap in scholarship by adopting a multimodal approach to postcolonial studies and testing the limits of conventional notions of text and reader more broadly.
