M.U.S.H - Mycelium Utilisation for Sustainable Housing

Lead Participant: SEVENOAKS MODULAR LTD

Abstract

Developing insulation boards from natural, renewable and food resources, which can be cultivated on feedstocks grown by farmers in the UK, for the development of new sustainable and resilient dwellings, and retrofit to existing dwellings enables a more resilient alignment with net-zero-carbon (embodied and operational) targets that will also benefit occupants and the planet's resources.

This project provides a new market for farmers at a time when they face enormous economic pressure and impact on their livelihoods. Their bio-based feedstocks can help support the cultivation of renewable, sustainable and resilient insulation for aspirational net-zero carbon housing across Wales and the UK.

The natural and renewable insulation designed, grown and fixed into our existing renewable timber frame construction systems when combined with waste timber steams from our manufacturing processes, secures value for materials that otherwise would have been fuel for our biomass boiler.
