Aegis-PPG (Personal Payment Gateway)

Abstract

Aegis-PPG provides a consumer centric online service that will provide real time notifications to end users for financial transactions aggregated across many retailers, banks, credit cards, payment gateways and stored value systems. By providing such notifications real-time, in a manner determined by the consumer, the probability of an end user detecting suspicious activity early, is greatly increased. In addition to passive notifications, the Aegis-PPG system will also provide flows that allow an end user to block/ actively authorise high value, and or suspicious transactions. As an example if the Aegis-PPG is notified of a cash withdrawal from a cashpoint location, yet at the same time the gateway is aware that the owners mobile phone is in a different location, the transaction can be flagged as suspicious.
This experience is made possible by having a users personal agent in the cloud - the Personal Payment Gateway - which has the following characteristics.
a) it is permanently available and addressable in the cloud, therefore allowing transaction gateways to notify it
b) it is highly secure and robust, making use of an advanced PKI architecture.
c) it supports a secure network that oversees all of a consumers devices, both knowing, when and how to address them real time as well as mining from them private contextual information (such as location) that can be used to inform security decisions.
The design and commercial positioning requires that a Personal Payment Gateway reside under an individual’s consumers control. This be because the Gateway is both privileged to highly personal information, but also because to have real value the gateway must be "financial provider" agnostic, allowing all data to be aggregated under the users preferences.
Aegis-PPG is based on pre-existing open source technology designed with high security requirements in mind. This technology emanated from the webinos project, which has receive 15 million euro investment and the attention of security experts from the likes of W3C, University of Oxford, Telefonica DOCOMO, Samsung, Sony Mobile, Deutsche Telecom, Fraunhofer and Telecom Italia.
The system has been designed to be as inclusive and easy to use as possible, with a very simple account set up model and notification schemes that piggy back on existing well understood models (SMS, Email, Voice and Web) rather than inventing new technologies
