Abstract

Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Technical Summary

It is becoming increasingly important for industries to shorten the time taken to develop manufacturing process for new products, increase efficiency, reduce costs and reduce solvent usage. The Brunel Institute for Bioengineering (BIB) has developed a range of rapid, continuous multistage liquid-liquid extraction centrifuges (known as Dynamic Extraction or DE centrifuges) which use the same principle of purification at all scales. These provide scaleup from analytical to pilot scale capable of processing up to 10kg per day of crude extract with total sample recovery. The prospect of full process (manufacturing) scale dynamic extraction is currently being researched with BBSRC support. This proposal addresses one important part of getting a new advanced Bioprocessing Centre (ABC) operational: the equipping and upgrading of the large scale dynamic extraction centrifuges in the Hazard¿s Laboratory. BIB has a balanced portfolio of research into the scale-up and manufacture of biopharmaceuticals. It is pioneering new research with BBSRC support on the purification of viable biologics using aqueous phase systems, and is consolidating research on the application of dynamic extraction technology to the rapid scale up and manufacture of new pharmaceutical products at trial grades and quantities. It is now in the process of establishing this new Advanced Bioprocessing Centre to act as a platform for the growth of new research on the technology both in scale-up and application as well as stimulating the new initiatives that will inevitably lead on from the proposed research.
