BBSRC DTG Studentship: Characterising the role of RhoG in the activation of the neutrophil NADPH oxidase

Lead Research Organisation: Babraham Institute
Department Name: UNLISTED

Abstract

Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Technical Summary

This proposal is aimed at understanding some fundamental principles of how neutrophils (a type of white blood cell) might damage host tissue during inflammation. Neutrophils are our first line of defence against bacterial and fungal infections but sometimes they attack the body with the same weapons they use to kill the pathogens, contributing to the damaging effects of many inflammatory diseases, such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The factors which dictate whether neutrophils cause a problem in inflammation are not fully understood and hence it’s currently difficult to know how to inhibit them specifically.
