Abstract

The investment in e-Science has delivered a huge impetus to UK research programmes but it has the potential to do much more. This potential will be realised in the UK only if we sustain the development of collaborative and cooperative research behaviour. Indeed we wish to extend it to far more participants, so that all researchers, designers and decision makers have the power of advanced e-Infrastructure at their finger tips. This requires continued collaboration to build that e-Infrastructure. It requires continued R&D to stimulate and test ideas about how best to exploit e-Infrastructure and it needs a commitment to sustain the provision of e-Infrastructure so that users can commit to it. As the e-Science Envoy, this post will encourage the continued development of e-Science within the UK. As a researcher, the Fellow will tackle strategic design issues concerning long-lived e-Infrastructure, which must undergo incremental change while delivering a stable and continuous service and concerning the reliable handling of information over long periods and across multiple heterogeneous administrative domains.This work will require pro-active engagement with the communities, organisations and government bodies that are commissioning, planning, devloping, operating and using advanced e-Infrastructure. This engagement must reach all relevant sectors of the UK and must be international, as, just like telephones and the Internet, e-Infrastructure must be international, because those who will work together using it are spread across many nations.

Description The research developed working relationships with many countries in the Americas, Asia, Australia and Europe. It contributed to policy and strategy in international contexts, such as e-Infrastructure Reserach Group and the Open Grid Federation. It contributed advanced and adaptive data-streaming workflow technologies that allow continuous streams of data, and arbitrary scale data to be handled with minimal IO overheads. This is now manifest in the system dispel4py that has been used by astronomers, climate scientists, life scientists and computational seismologists. It is now leading to an understanding of how the large multi-organisation, multi-discipline, multi-national loosely coupled federations that are need to address today's global challenges need support for effective governance mechanisms as experise, data and resources are pooled to meet the challenges.
Exploitation Route The data-streaming workflow strategy has already been adopted by Fujitsu, e.g. in smart city applications. It can easily be wrapped in any computer language a community is using and be mapped to scaleable data-intensive computational environments such as Apache Storm and Apache SPark, it can exploit HPC architectures using MPI, and specialised correlation architectures such as the NERC-funded Terracorrelator. It is developing further in ongoing H2020 projects, ENVRIplus and DARE.

Description The fellowship provided time for personal research but also required that considerable investment in the role of e-Science Envoy. This latter role required the fellow to represent the UK e-Science/e-Research community at many international meetings on five continents, at standards bodies, and in governmental research contexts, such as the group developing the strategy for European e-Infrastructure. The fellow also hosted visiting delegations, such as those from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He also helped to coordinate and lead the UK e-Science/e-Research community through heading the arrangements for an annual meeting, through running a national forum, through town meetings on key issues and by undertaking fact-finding missions. This led to several strategic reports and regular interaction with Research Councils at a time when it was difficult to sustain the value of community building and investment in e-Infrastructure. The sequences of interactions with the astronomers facilitating the International Virtual Observatory Alliance are still bearing fruit, for example in the LSST and SKA project discussions. The sequence of interactions with geoscientists has led to continuing collaborations, now developing natural hazard mitigation research on a global scale.
